The Best Time of Year to Mow Your Lawn in Western Sydney
Mowing schedules in Sydney aren't one-size-fits-all — here's how to time your cuts through the seasons for a thicker, greener lawn.
Mowing schedules matter more than most Western Sydney homeowners realise. Cut too short in summer and you'll burn the lawn. Leave it too long in spring and you'll invite weeds.
Spring (Sep–Nov)
This is the growth surge. Move to weekly mowing, keep blades sharp and feed early in the season. Leave grass slightly longer than winter height.
Summer (Dec–Feb)
Weekly mowing, higher blade height (40–50mm). Never remove more than a third of the leaf in a single cut — that's the fastest way to stress a lawn in the heat.
Autumn (Mar–May)
Back to fortnightly. This is the second-best time to fertilise. Get in front of leaf drop by scheduling a garden tidy alongside the mow.
Winter (Jun–Aug)
Most Sydney lawns barely grow. Monthly mowing at a slightly lower height is enough. It's also a great time to book pressure cleaning and gutter clears before spring.
A quick rule of thumb
If you can hear the mower struggle, the grass is too long — you've left it a cut too many.
